Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Investigative reporting plays a pivotal role in exposing corruption and promoting accountability. In Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, where corruption remains a pressing issue, journalists face significant ethical concerns when conducting investigations. These concerns include ensuring accuracy, protecting sources, and avoiding sensationalism (Okoh & Adewale, 2023). Investigative journalists often operate under challenging conditions, including political interference, intimidation, and limited resources, which complicate adherence to ethical standards (Abah et al., 2024). Despite these challenges, investigative reporting remains crucial in combating corruption and fostering transparency. Ethical frameworks, such as the Code of Ethics for Nigerian Journalists, emphasize fairness, confidentiality, and public interest, yet their application often varies in practice. This study explores the ethical dilemmas faced by journalists in Makurdi and the strategies they employ to navigate these challenges.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Makurdi, ethical concerns in investigative reporting of corruption often hinder effective journalism. Journalists face risks such as threats to personal safety, lack of institutional support, and ethical dilemmas in protecting sources and ensuring balanced reporting (Bello & Sani, 2023). Additionally, the pressure to deliver impactful stories sometimes leads to sensationalism, undermining public trust in investigative journalism. This study seeks to identify these ethical challenges and propose solutions for fostering responsible investigative practices in the fight against corruption.
